How to choose the right snowboard equipment, a guide for beginners – Aleksandar Ilić, snowboard instructor Kopaonik

Snowboard instructor Aleksandar Ilić from Kopaonik advises beginners on how to choose the right snowboarding equipment.

Aleksandar receives almost the same questions every winter regarding the choice of snowboard equipment, especially from beginners – “Which snowboard should I buy?”, “How do I know if the bindings and boots are right for me?”

That’s why he put together a short guide for buying snowboard equipment for beginners, which will help them avoid mistakes and immediately enjoy the snow.

1. How to choose the size of a snowboard board

The length of the board depends on the height and weight of the snowboarder – the board should reach approximately the chin.

For beginners, a shorter board is better – it is easier to turn and control. Heavier riders should choose a harder and longer board for stability.

– Instructor’s recommendation: If you are between two lengths – always take the shorter one.

2. Flex boards – hardness and control

Flex shows how flexible the board is:

Soft: ideal for beginners, forgiving of mistakes and easy to enter turns.

Medium: universal, good for both the track and for progressing.

Stiff: for carving and aggressive riding – for more experienced riders.

3. Flex bindings

Bindings must be matched to the board:

Softer bindings – more comfort and flexibility.

Harder bindings – more precision.

If you are a beginner, the combination of a soft board and softer bindings is a perfect match.

4. Snowboard boots – comfort above all

Boots are perhaps the most important piece of equipment. They must be firm but comfortable. The heel must not slip.

The foam (liner) “loosens” a little after a few rides – so let them be slightly tight at the start.

Tightening systems (BOA, laces, speed lace) are a matter of taste – choose the one that is easiest for you to use.

5. Board type – shape and style

True Twin: symmetrical board, great for freestyle and learning.

Directional: more stable and better for piste and faster riding.

Rocker / Flat / Camber: shapes that determine how the board reacts on the snow.

– For beginners, Rocker and Flat-Rocker are the best – they turn easier and “catch the edge” less.

Advice from a snowboard instructor from Kopaonik – Don’t buy equipment just by appearance or brand – buy what suits your height, weight and riding level.

You can send your data (height, weight and where you ride) to snowboard instructor Aleksandar Ilić, and he can help you choose the right:

– ideal board length

– flex stiffness

– right type of bindings and shoes
