On Kopaonik, wild blueberries are present on about 300 hectares, and they ripen in late July and early August, and picking is possible, but with strict rules and supervision by employees of the Kopaonik National Park.
Permit and restrictions
Blueberries are a protected species, so picking is only possible with a permit from the Kopaonik National Park. Picking is allowed exclusively by hand, and only in limited quantities for personal use, under the supervision of the park patrol. Mechanical tools (combs, rakes, pickers) are strictly prohibited, as they damage the plants.
Control and protection
The park controls picking on a daily basis – guards, inspectors and police are present during patrols. In the case of improper picking (without a permit, green berries or using mechanized equipment), administrative and criminal penalties are combined, with the confiscation of tools.
Cultural and ecological significance
Blueberries are traditionally an important resource for local communities. Sustainable harvesting, do not pick all the berries on one plant, but leave some for the animals. The park is one of the organizers of educational events such as the “Blueberry Days” event, which promotes responsible harvesting and plant protection.
